Justifying My Idea
My chosen idea for my music video followed the conventions of a performance structured video which displayed my skills in factors of tv & film such as cinematography, acting, directing and post-production. the video would feature a range of locations where the actor would be alone; thus depicting A SUBLIMINAL MESSAGE TO THE AUDIENCE ABOUT THE 'SINGERS' MIND. THE SAND DUNE SCENE IS SHOWCASED VIA A DRONE SHOT, WHICH BECOMES FURTHER AWAY FROM THE ARTIST EACH SECOND. THEREFORE. THE AUDIENCE BEGIN TO SEE HIS SURROUNDINGS... DUE TO THE SKY REPLACEMENT EFFECT IT GIVES AN ILLUSION THAT TIME IS MOVING VERY FAST YET THE PERFORMER REMAINS AT A NORMAL SPEED.
i liked the idea of creating a technical based performance music video because i feel as if it would challenge me as it would let me experiment with creating different types of angle shots while still allowing me to focus on factors such cinematography. AS THERE IS NO NARRATIVE TO THE VIDEO IT WILL ALSO BE A CHALLENGE TO KEEP THE AUDIENCE ENGAGED WITH THE VIDEO. THIS FORCES ME TO WORK HARDER IN ORDER TO MAKE MY VIDEO APPEALING AMD INTERESTING TO WATCH. I WILL DO THIS VIA A VARIETY OF EDITING TECHNIQUES, LOCATIONS., CAMERA MOVEMENTS, SHOTS, ANGLES AND OTHER CONVENTIONS OF MEDIA.

ANALYZING POTENTIAL VIDEOS:
FIRST VIDEO: JUSTIN BIEBER - I'LL SHOW YOU
SUMMARY:
jUSTIN BIEBER is a Canadian singer and songwriter. Born in 1994 in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, to a single mother. HE ARTIST WHO BECAME FAMOUS AFTER BEING DISCOVERED BY HIS CURRENT MANAGER, SCOOTER BRAUN ON YOUTUBE. 'Bieber went from an unknown, untrained singer to a budding superstar with a big-time record deal with Usher within two years. Bieber went on to become the first solo artist to have four singles enter the Top 40 before the release of a debut album. His 2009 album My World has gone platinum in several countries. He later experienced significant media exposure from offensive activity. Nonetheless, the singer made his comeback in 2015 with his first No. 1 song, "What Do You Mean?" His 2017 collaboration with Luis Fonsi, “Despacito,” broke the all-time record for most consecutive weeks at the number one spot on the Top 100'. |
I'LL SHOW YOU IS written by Justin Bieber regards his life and how he is always in the spotlight, however, it uses an upbeat, modern style which would compliment the editing I wish to do very well. As it would allow me to express my techniques in conventions which i mentioned previously in regards to editing, film-making, directing, acting and other aspects...
MY ESSENTIAL PLOT:
ESSENTIALLY THE VIDEO FOR I'LL SHOW YOU WON'T focus upon any specific narrative, instead I will use a range of different shots and effects within production and post production in order to keep the audience captivated. Within this video I will record in various locations ranging from a dark drama studio, to sand dunes and a empty road. (I selected these locations as they would allow me to use them for cinematic effect). AS WELL AS THIS THE VIDEO CONVEYS A MESSAGE ALONG WITH THE LYRICS OF THE SONG. THE SONG IS SIGNIFYING THE IDEA OF PRESSURE AND HOW IN MODERN DAY SOCIETY PEOPLE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PERFECT, WITH NO FLAWS AND MAKE NO MISTAKES. THIS FORCES PEOPLE TO ISOLATE THEMSELVES IN ORDER TO PREVENT THEMSELVES FROM WRONG DOING. WHEN VIEWING MY STORYBOARD IS EVIDENT THAT I'VE TRIED TO Interpret THE ORIGINAL MESSAGE bieber tried to convey as the actor in my video is alone in every scene.
verse one -
the opening verse will showcase the actor walking in the middle of an empty road. an act which seems deadly is made un-threatened via the emptiness around the artist. furthermore, this scene continues into a contrasting scene which displays an alternate colour scheme. in a dark room with a singular light illuminating the silhouette of the singer. all that can be seen in the figure of the singer. THIS SIGNIFIES THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE OUTSIDE WORLD. AS PEOPLE CAN ONLY SEE WHAT'S ON THE OUTSIDE OF A PERSON AND NOT WHAT'S INSIDE. by preventing the audience from seeing the artists features it leaves them curious as to the appearance and the expression of the actor as the song plays.
CHORUS -
THE FIRST CHORUS FEATURES THE SINGER ON A SAND-DUNE AS THE RADIANT SUN BEAMS ONTO THE SINGER, CREATING A SILHOUETTE OR LIGHTING UP THE SINGER DEPENDING ON WHAT TYPE OF SHOT I'M FILMING. It's on this sand-dune where the main drone shot will be used in order to captivate the surroundings of the artists whilst also making the actor appear smaller thus making the surrounding elements of the world more dominant as they become larger and in shot. in this shot i will also utilize the sky replacement effect ion order to give the illusion of time moving fats whilst the singer remains at his original speed making him seem to be stuck in time as the time passes evidently due to the rapid movements of the clouds.
verse two -
the second verse, starts on the sand-dune as a brighter colour scheme alternates between the previous scene, making the shot visually appealing top the audience.carrying on, the following shot is of the actor in a dark room, the spotlight connoting a beacon of hope and light from above as the singer sits hopelessly on a stool. once again alone and afraid to move.
final chorus -
the final chours will feature a birds eye view shot which does a full pan around the artist as he drops to his knees towards the sun looking down as hair blows in the wind. this shot will appear the the audience as original as perceiving a vast amount of surroundings with different colour in a majority of a few seconds will have a long lasting effect possibly making them want to rewind and watch again...

VERSE ONE : 'My life is a movie and everyone's watching
So let's get to the good part and past all the nonsense
Sometimes it's hard to do the right thing
When the pressure's coming down like lightning
It's like they want me to be perfect
When they don't even know that I'm hurting'
CHORUS 'Cause life's not easy, I'm not made out of steel
Don't forget that I'm human, don't forget that I'm real
Act like you know me, but you never will
But there's one thing that I know for sure
I'll show you
I'll show you
I'll show you
I'll show you'
VERSE TWO : 'I've got to learn things, learn them the hard way
Got to see what it feels like, no matter what they say
Sometimes it's hard to do the right thing

second video: snow patrol - set fire to the third bar
SUMMARY: 'Snow Patrol are a ROCK band from Northern Ireland, formed in SCOTLAND in 1994. THE BAND consists of GARY LIGHTBODY (vocals, guitar), NATHAN CONNOLLY (guitar, backing vocals), PAUL WILSON (bass Guitar, backing vocals), JONNY QUINN (drums), and JOHNNY MCDAID (piano, guitar, backing vocals).Initially an indie rock band, the band rose to prominence in the early-mid 2000's as part of the post-Britpop movement.' WITHIN THEIR MANY YEARS AS A BAND THEY HAVE PRODUCED SOME HIT SONGS... SUCH AS CHASING CARS, RUN AND JUST SAY YES. HOWEVER, I BELIEVE THAT TYHESE SONGS DON'T FIT THE SPECIFIC GENRE OF VIDEO I AM GOING FOR IF I WERE TO CHOOSE A SNOW PATROL SONG. |
SET FIRE TO THE THIRD BAR FEATURING MARTHA WAINWRIGHT IS A SONG WHICH DEPICTS A DARKER TONE. The song represents a low-key TONE, this will have to be resembled THROUGH the filming, lighting and editing. As well as this, the tone of the music fits A SPECIFIC story-line, THUS I WOULD HAVE A NARRATIVE MUSIC VIDEO FOR THIS SONG. THE NARRATIVE DEPICTING A DARK ARC. THE MAIN STORY SURROUNDING A SINGULAR PERSON WHO HAS BEEN INJURED DUE TO HIS DARING LIFESTYLE THUS HE BEGINS TO HALLUCINATE AND VISION PEOPLE AS HE WALKS, ATTEMPTING TO GET BACK TO SAFETY WHERE HE CAN RECOVER. THE HALLUCINATIONS OFFER PERFECT OPPORTUNITIES TO PLACE EFFECTS.
MY ESSENTIAL PLOT:
THIS VIDEO FOLLOWS THE CODES AND CONVENTIONS OF A NARRATIVE STRUCTURED MUSIC VIDEO. THE VIDEO FEATURES A BEGINNING, MIDDLE AND END. THE NARRATIVE OF THE VIDEO FOLLOWS A YOUNG MAN WHO LIVES A POOR, HARD LIFE WHICH HEAVILY INCLUDES ALCOHOL, DRUGS AS HE DISPLAYS CHARACTERISTICS OF A PERSONALITY WHICH IS UNCARING, AND HARD TO BREAK. HOWEVER, AFTER BEING HIT WITH A NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE HE ATTEMPTS TO GET BACK TO HIS HOME IN ONE PIECE AS HE BLEEDS, SWEATS AND CRIES. ON HIS ATTEMPTED JOURNEY HOME HE HAS HALLUCINATIONS WHICH IS WHERE EFFECT WILL COME INTO PLAY, THE AUDIENCE WILL BE INDULGED AS THE CHARACTER SEE'S FAMILY MEMBERS AND FRIENDS THUS UNRAVELING THE TRUTH DEPICTING THE CHARACTER TO BE WEAKER ON THE INSIDE THAN HE APPEARS TO BE ON THE OUTSIDE.
VERSE ONE -
THE OPENING VERSE, WILL ESTABLISH THE CHARACTER, LOCATION AND THEME OF THE VIDEO WITHIN THE OPENING SECONDS. BEFORE THE MUSIC BEGINS THERE WILL BE A SECTION OF NARRATIVE WHERE THE MAIN CHARACTER HAS A FLASH-THROUGH OF HIS LIFE, THUS KEEPING THE AUDIENCE UP TO DATE AS TO THE TYPE OF PERSON HE IS. HOWEVER, AS THE SONG STARTS THE COLOUR SCHEME REFLECTS THE DARK LYRICS, A VARIETY OF SHOTS ARE USED TO FOCUS UPON THE MISE EN SCENE OF THE CHARACTER, SUCH AS THE BLOOD, FACIAL EXPRESSIONS AND POSITIONING OF THE CHARACTER.
CHORUS -
THE MAIN CHORUS, WILL FEATURE THE FIRST HALLUCINATION OF THE MAIN CHARACTER, AS HE FALLS TO THE GROUND, GRASPING HIS SIDE ABDOMINAL SWEAT DRIPS LIGHTLY FROM HIS NOSE AS CLEAR PANTING CAN BE SEEN CONNOTING EXHAUSTION. HE BLINDLY LOOS UP ONLY TO SEE SOMEONE RUNNING TOWARDS HIM TO HELP HIM UP. FROM INFORMATION CONVEYED THROUGH THE FLASH-THROUGH THE AUDIENCE KNOW THAT THE PERSON HELPING HIM UP IS HIS BROTHER. DURING THIS SHOT, I WILL USE A HANDHELD EFFECT IN ORDER TO MAKE THE STABILIZATION OF THE SCENE WORSE MAKING THE AUDIENCE GAIN THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE CHARACTER.
SECOND VERSE -
THE SECOND VERSE WILL DISPLAY A WIDER VARIETY OF SHOTS AND LOCATIONS, AS A LONG SHOT WILL BE USED TO SHOW THE CHARACTER WEAKLY MOVING HIMSELF ALONG THE HARD GRAVEL PATH. THIS WILL GRAB EMPATHY FROM THE AUDIENCE as they have just began to connect the he character.
final chorus -
the final chours will depict the main character struggling to lift himself up after his journey, his arms weak. and legs shake. a singular tear flows out f the characters eye portraying his true self. he lays down on the ground as his eyes close and open, this is where he see's his last hallucination of his mother who is in the sky. the final shot of the music video is the main character's mother reaching out for her son top join her as the screen cuts to white.

VERSE ONE - 'I find the map and draw a straight line
Over rivers, farms and state lines
The distance from here to where you'd be
It's only finger-lengths that I see
I touch the place
Where I'd find your face
My fingers increases
Of distant dark places
I hang my coat up in the first bar
There is no peace that I've found so far
The laughter penetrates my silence
As drunken men find flaws in science
Their word's mostly noises
Ghosts with just voices
Your words in my memory
Are like music to me
CHORUS - I'm miles from where you are
I lay down on the cold ground
I, I pray that something picks me up
And sets me down in your warm arms
After I have traveled so far
SECOND VERSE - We'd set the fire to the third bar
We'd share each other like an island
Until exhausted, close our eyelids
And dreaming, pick up from
The last place we left off
Your soft skin is weeping
A joy you can't keep in
I'm miles from where you are
CHORUS - I lay down on the cold ground
And I, I pray that something picks me up
And sets me down in your warm arms
And miles from where you are
I lay down on the cold ground
And I, I pray that something picks me up
And sets me down in your warm arms'

third video: bugzy malone - run ft. rag'n'bone man
SUMMARY: 'Aaron Davis (born 20 December 1990), better known by his stage name Bugzy Malone, is an English grime rapper from Manchester, England. Malone has been described as one of the key MCs instigating a "grime revival" moving the UK urban scene away from more commercially oriented music.' 'Run is the 3rd song released from Bugzy Malone’s upcoming debut album B. Inspired due 17th of August 2018. The track tells a story of a boy on the run throughout a city, looking for a “home”. The first verse talks about the boy’s relationship with his “family”, be that his real family or his mates. The following verses signal what’s happened since the boy has left the family/relationship mentioned in the first verse.'
|
Run created by Bugzy Malone ft. Rag'n'Bone Man resembles a similar tone to 'Set The Fire To The Third Bar' however, it is more aggressive. Because of this, the story-line in the music video would have a higher focus upon the conventions of action and enigma. As well as this, If I were to create a music video for this track I believe the colour scheme of the video will be either low-key or in black and white (as both of these connote darkness and a rough lifestyle). The music video for Run would be a mixed video, thus meaning it would contain performance and a narrative. The music has a darker tone meaning the conventions would have to follow the stereotypes of this type of music. By this I mean low-key and realistic lighting, the narrative can't be too fast, the location needs to be acceptable and many more. This video would feature a story of a character running away from his problems, the problems would be stated within the opening sequence to the video and within the first 30 seconds of the music playing.
My essential plot:
essentially for this video i am going to produce a mixed music video. therefore the video portrays conventions of a narrative and a performance video in one music video. the song is based around a dark story therefore this concept would have to remain in my video. as i live in Oman it would be much harder to find locations which replicate the similar feel of the video which give the same impact. in relation to this the colour scheme of the video would be set in black and white, although it does resemble what is in the actual music video i would also have to make my video black and white because the vibrant colours of Oman wouldn't resemble the theme of my video.
when making this video i would have character running away from, their problems which have built up over the years (this will be evident through the usage of mise en scene with props, costume, characters and many other factors). as well as this it would portray the artists singing as a 360 pan shot would rotate several times around them however, the actor would maintain eye contact with the audience making them feel watched and on display.
verse one - the opening verse will establish the main character as well as the setting he is living in and trying to get away from. by using sound, lighting, mise en scene and other conventions i will be able to convey an unstable, unsafe household in one shot. this scene will show the young boy packing a back, a big part of this scene will shopt the boy packing a weapon thus signifying the type of place he lives in. giving the audience an insight into the stability of his family.
chorus - the first chorus will show the young boy running away in ramped slow motion giving a interesting effect to the audience. and this will be the first time the audience see the artists signing the chorus, the camera pans around him before switching back to the boy running and not looking back in denial of changing his mind.
VERSE TWO - THE SECOND VERSE WILL DISPLAY A MORE COMPLEX NARRATIVE AS THE BOY IS WONDERING AIMLESSLY THROUGH TREES (WHICH MAKE THE LOCATION RESEMBLE THAT OF A FOREST). THE LOW-KEY LIGHTING WILL MAKE THE AUDIENCE TENSE AS THE WOODS AND NIGHT ARE STEREO TYPICALLY SCARY AND FULL OF ENTITIES OR MANIACS.
FINAL CHORUS - THE LAST CHORUS, WILL END WILL A FADED BLACK SCREEN. THE FINAL SHOT BEING A WIDE, LONG SHOT DISPLAYING THE BOY RUNNING OUT OF SIGHT. HOWEVER, BEFORE THAT A TRACKING SHOT OF THE SINGER WILL BRING THE AUDIENCE FROM A COWBOY SHOT UP TO A CLOSE UP. HIS EXPRESSION ASSERTING A SERIOUS EXPRESSION.

VERSE ONE - 'You were knocking on the door
They're looking at you through the peeper
You say you don't love them, they say they don't love you either
You say you don't care, you're lying through your teeth-a
You're cut deep down and the wound is getting deeper
You're getting kinda hungry looking like a Wiz Khalifa
The roads are getting cold and now you're gonna catch a fever
Penny for your thoughts, that's because the door's staying closed
And your memories are getting no cheaper
Family first, but you're not a believer
It's been a nightmare for this daydreamer
They've done you dirty and it's getting no cleaner
'Cause even though you're hurt they're calling it a misdemeanour
CHORUS - Young boy run (run)
They're tryna keep you in the slums (slums)
Young boy run (run)
You gotta love yourself these days
You gotta love yourself
Young boy run (run)
They're tryna keep you in the slums (slums)
Young boy run (run)
You gotta love yourself these days
You gotta love yourself
VERSE TWO - Panic sets in, you realise that you're standing there alone
You pick your bags up and your running for the stairway
Adrenaline running from your head into your toes
'Cause you know that people they escape rarely
What's sin when you're sinning only to survive?
You're getting by but you're just getting by barely
You're stumblin', telling them that they don't know the struggle
They don't understand that struggle can be scary
Bottom of the stairs, you run out the fire exit
Backstreet boy, you don't wanna get arrested
Running through the city's got this young boy breathless
And he better be careful 'cause they'll eat him for breakfast
Young boy run (run)
CHORUS - They're tryna keep you in the slums (slums)
Young boy run (run)
You gotta love yourself these days
You gotta love yourself
Young boy run (run)

My Final Idea.
JUSTIN BIEBER - I'LL SHOW YOU
The music video will not contain any specific narrative, however, I've come upon the decision to focus upon a more technical music video thus allowing me to display my techniques within videography as well as editing. I'll Show You has a melody which I can work with and the use of snares will enable me to add quick cuts to the beat which will indulge the audience heavily. Furthermore, by using this song it will challenge my creativity skills, as with a technical music video there needs to be a wide variety of camera shots, angles and movements as well as different locations, costumes and editing techniques. Editing techniques include different, unique transitions and distorting effects which make the audience attracted to the visual aesthetic of the video itself.
For my video I plan to use several tracking shots as they can be manipulated easily and efficiently, thus giving a interesting effect to the audience. I also plan to use a drone in order to get 360 degrees rotations around the actor and birds eye view shots. One of my locations is a sand-dune located upon the entrance of the desert safari in Dubai. This drone shot will feature the actor singing the song as the drone tracks away, allowing the audience to gain perspective of a wider scene. This is where I plan to edit another distorting effect labelled the sky manipulation. The sky manipulation effect gives the impression that time is speed ramped as hours move by in seconds however, the actor will provide a contrasting contradiction to the effect as he'll move at a normal pace.
SHOOTING LOCATIONS
1) British SCHOOL MUSCAT (DRAMA STUDIO)
IN MY VIDEO I WILL BE USING THE BRITISH SCHOOL MUSCATS DRAMA FACILITIES IN ORDER TO CAPTURE THE DARK ROOM/SPOTLIGHT SCENES AS THEY HAVE THE EQUPITMENT I NEED TO FILM AND GET THE RIGHT EFFECT.

2) DESERT SAFARI DUBAI
I WILL BE TRAVELLING TO DUBAI IN ORDER TO FILM THE DRONE SHOTS (DUE TOP THE BETTER CINEMATOGRAPHY AND LEGALITY OF DRONES). I'VE CHOSEN THE DESERT SAND DUNES AS THEY CONTAIN SOME MORE SURROUNDINGS THAN JUST SAND THEREFORE THERE IS A WIDER WORLD FOR THE AUDIENCE TO LOOK AT AS THE DRONE SHOT TRACKS AWAY FROM THE ACTOR DURING THE CHORUS.
3) the empty road
i needed to find a secure, safe and empty location which featured a long straight road so that i could capture the remaning of the song in the cinematography in regards to being alone.

JACK OVERTON ACTOR - SINGER - Lighting & sound engineer - director THE REASON I AM ACTING AS WELL AS DIRECTING IN MY OWN MUSIC VIDEO IS BECAUSE IT'S VERY EFFICIENT. IT ALLOWS ME TO BE ABLE TO RE-SHOOT IF NEEDED AT ANY TIME; AS WELL AS THIS I AM ABLE TO GIVE MYSELF POINTS AFTER REVIEWING THE FOOTAGE IF I FELT THAT I DIDN'T ACT WELL ENOUGH. ONE OF MY STRONG POINTS IS ACTING AND I'M GOOD AT MIMING SONGS THEREFORE THE WORK I PRODUCE WILL LOOK GENUINE. i am also the lighting and sound engineer, this is because i know what i have envisioned on my storyboard and how i'd like the scene to look. + i also know if there are any diegetic or non-diegetic sound effects which need to be added in post production. |
Connor hICKEY CAMERA OPERATIVE Connor is a crew member of mine who works as the camera operative. he has experience with he recording device (of this video) which is the iPhone XS max. furthermore, he lives minutes away from me., therefore using him as the main operator makes the time more efficient & re-shoots are made easier. |

Location Scouting Reports
These location scouting reports are physical evidence that I've completed accurate research about the locations in which I will be filming for the I'll Show You music video. As of right now my locations range from Muscat to Boushar, where I will be using a school facility as well as a sand-dune in order to bring a realism to the shots. As shown on the sheets, the dates of filming would be the 13th-14th of January. The lighting used will be LED + Natural and no diegetic audio will be recorded. |

As I planned out my specific shots, in envisioned what they'd look like on screen. The reason I didn't use the typical aesthetically appealing storyboard template was because I feel that it limits what I can say to myself. By doing this, I was able to remind myself what mise en scene to use as well as, the types of shots, movements and angles.

EQUIPMENT
In order to achieve the music video I have envisioned I need specific equipment in order to ensure that the shots, movements and angles come out perfectly. Therefore, a part of my pre-production is to research and describe what equipment i'm using and why i'm using it:
